Hoosick – Agnes Mary (Knapp) Powers, 92, passed away on Wednesday, February 24, 2010, at the Centers for Living & Rehabilitation in Bennington, VT, where she resided since 2001. She had formerly resided in East Hoosick, NY, with her husband Richard J. Powers Sr. Agnes and Richard were married on July 20, 1936, at St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington and were married for 57 years.
Born on October 27, 1917, in Bennington, Agnes was the daughter of the late Edward and Margaret (Downer) Knapp. She was educated at schools in Bennington. Agnes worked at the Albany Felt Company until retiring in 1979. A devout catholic, she was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church in Hoosick Falls, NY, where she was very active. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, a Eucharist Minister at the Church, an honorary alumna of St. Mary’s
Academy, Past President of St. Mary’s Auxiliary and a member of Hoosick Villagers.
Agnes enjoyed summers spent at her camp on Barbers Pond in Pownal, VT, with family and friends. She lived a fulfilling, rewarding and loving life with and for her children and grandchildren on the family farm, which she and her husband Richard operated until his retirement. She was an avid painter and crafter and worked on numerous fund-raisers and bazaars throughout her years. She was extremely active in her community, church and local Catholic school. Her family has wonderful memories of big family gatherings at the farm for the holidays throughout the years. Agnes was proud of her strong Irish heritage and was fortunate enough to visit Ireland twice in her lifetime.
Survivors include three daughters, Margaret and her husband John Bakaitis of East Hoosick, Kathleen and her husband William Peabody and Barbara and her husband Fred Bouplon, two sons, Richard J. Jr. and wife Ann Powers and Edward and wife Bronnie Powers all of Hoosick Falls, a sister, Helen Fraher of Burlington, VT, a brother, Lawrence Knapp of Bennington, twenty-one grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She is pre-deceased by three grandchildren, three sisters, Grace Knapp, Catherine Deery and Irene Joly, and two brothers, Edward and Richard Knapp.
Funeral services were Saturday, February 27, at 9:15 am from the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street in Hoosick Falls. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at 10 am from the Immaculate Conception Church on Main Street. Burial followed the Mass at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Hoosick Falls. Relatives and friends called at the funeral home on Friday from 4 to 7 pm. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to either St. Mary’s Academy, The Karen McGovern Memorial Fund or the Northeast Chapter for CF, through the funeral home.
