Harriet Foss White

Hoosick – Harriet Foss White, 91, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother died at daybreak on Friday, March 12, 2010, at 318 Bovie Hill Road, Hoosick, NY, with her family beside her. Formerly residing in Pittsfield, MA, she had made her home with her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Everett Quackenbush, since 2000.
Born in Pittsfield on July 16, 1918, Mrs. White was the daughter of Harry J. and MayBelle Robinson Foss and resided at 550 South Street, a home her father had built for their large family. She attended the Miss Mill’s School, now the Women’s Club, on Wendell Avenue and graduated in 1936 from Northfield School For Girls. After attending Berkshire Business College, she was employed by Berkshire Bank & Trust for twenty years and by Davis Real Estate for fifteen years as secretary and bookkeeper.
Harriet Foss married Pvt. Carlton R. White of Pittsfield in Chicago on 4/4/44. They were married for 44 years. Mr. White died on September 27, 1991. Harriet was a life-long member of the South Congregational Church, Pittsfield, and belonged for years to the May Mattoon Society. In her later years, Mrs. White enjoyed belonging to the Church bell choir.
In Hoosick, Mrs. White was an active member of the Golden Girls Book Club and enjoyed gardening, reading, playing games and spending much time on her deck with its glorious view of the Bennington mountains. The family cat and dog were never far from her side. Harriet loved spending time with her family and friends.
Harriet Foss White is pre-deceased by four brothers, three sisters and a step-sister. Survivors include another daughter, Margaret White-Efron and her husband Marcel of Sonoma, CA, granddaughters, Jessica S. McComish and husband John and Jeanna S. Kuzia, both of Dalton, MA, and her great-grandchildren, Jonah C. Schichtl, Jaden A. Kuzia and John S. McComish all of Dalton. Mrs. White leaves many nieces and nephews as well.
The family is holding calling hours for local friends at the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main St., Hoosick Falls, NY, on Thursday, March 18, from 6 to 8 pm. Following cremation, a Memorial Service will be held at the South Congregational Church, 110 South St., on Saturday, March 20, at 11 am. In honor of Harriet please consider dressing in vibrant spring colors in celebration of her life. Funeral arrangements are with the Wellington Funeral Home in Pittsfield.
