Stephentown – Robert E. Hinman, 82, died Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at Albany Medical Center.
Born in Albany, NY, on February 13, 1928, he was the son of Herbert and Blanche Summerfield Hinman. He attended grammar school in Albany and Canaan, NY, and high school in New Lebanon, NY, and Pittsfield, MA.
After three years in the Army, Mr. Hinman attended and was a graduate of Boston University where he earned his Associate of Arts degree and Bachelor of Science degree, much to the surprise of many, and also earned his Master’s degree from the State University of New York at Albany.
He taught in public schools in Great Barrington, MA, and Hillsdale, NY, and later served as Director of Admissions and Acting Headmaster at the former Barrington School for Boys in Great Barrington.
Mr. Hinman left the field of education in 1962 and became Director of Sales at the former Jug End Resort in South Egremont, MA. He held the same position at the Whiteface Inn in Lake Placid, NY, and the Equinox Hotel in Manchester, VT. In 1981 he changed fields again and took the position of Manager of Gemini Development.
Robert served two terms as Chairman of the Board of Selectmen in Egremont, MA, and was a co-founder of the Junior Chamber of Commerce in Great Barrington. He also held membership in the Wyantenuck Country Club, the Egremont Country Club and, most recently, the Waubeeka Country Club.
He had a great passion for life, golf, cats and the Boston Red Sox – not necessarily in that order.
He is survived by his brother, John of Clifton Park, NY, his former wife, Helen Hinman of Lee, MA, three daughters, Nancy Forman and her husband Alan of Nanuet, NY, Susan Fratalone and her husband John of Hillsdale and Melissa Candee and her husband James of Alford, MA. He also leaves behind six grandsons, Matthew and Ross Forman, Ian Law and his wife Patti, Scott Kogut, Robert J. Hinman and Michael Phillips, and one great-granddaughter, Nia Law. Mr. Hinman also enjoyed having many friends, especially Helen Koepp, and his fellow members of Alcoholics Anonymous, to which Mr. Hinman belonged for over thirty years.
There will be no funeral service. The burial will take place in the Canaan Cemetery in Canaan. Arrangements are entrusted to Roche Funeral Home of Lenox, MA.
A memorial service, which family and friends are invited to attend, will be held at the Canaan Congregational Church at a later date.
