The History Of Hats

March 19, 2010 By eastwickpress

Betty Stears will present a program on the history of hats to the Poestenkill Historical Society on Tuesday, March 23, at 7:30 pm in the Poestenkill Town Hall on Rt. 351.
The history of wearing hats can be traced back as far as primitive man. Throughout the centuries both men and women have worn various forms of headdress, but it was in the late 14th and 15th centuries that hats started to be worn. Hats were considered an important fashion item for men during that period unlike women’s hats which were considered a fashion item later, in the 18th Century. Hats continued to be popular until the 1960s when they underwent a decline. Hat wearing is gradually becoming more common.
The program is free, and the public is welcome. If you would like to bring or wear a hat to the program to share, it would be most welcome. There will be refreshments served after the program. For directions call, Pat at 283-5223.
