The Widow Lucy Pierce Dies

Wednesday, February 2, 1853: I am lame today. Geo P. started to go north into Vermont to buy cattle, He went on horseback. Today I walked down to see the widow Lucy Pierce, she continues quite sick. Tonight Sarah O. watched with the widow L. Pierce and Laura Newton watched with Sarah.
Thursday: Today John F. took my horse and cutter and went to Pittsfield after Doctor, that is old Doctor Brewster for the widow Lucy Pierce. John F. went after said Doctor by the request of Sylvenas Carpenter.
Friday: I walked down to see the widow Lucy Pierce twice, she lies dying and I returned home. She died a short time after I left, that is at two o’clock this afternoon.
Saturday: I went to Hancock Village with my horse and wagon, I carried seven pounds butter to the Union Store and traded it at 18 cts per, I bought sugar, molasses, and nutmeg.
Sunday: Today the funeral of the widow Lucy Pierce to the Baptist Church. Elder Nathan Seet preached.
Thursday: Tonight Harriet Wylie came home with my two daughters from singing school and stayed with us.
Friday: This afternoon my two daughters and Harriet Wylie visited to the widow Moreys.
Saturday: I went with my one horse wagon to Hancock village, I carried  18 pounds of butter to the Union store at 18 cents and took a bill of the amount but did not trade any. I left two dozen of boosums to Lapum’s store for my women and a bag of boosums for the widow Wylie’s daughters. Today John F. heated and broke a rock in the garden south the house and Patrick worked at the wood pile. Today Mary Hatch visited us and went to singing school with my children and she stayed all night.
Sunday: A windy snow storm.
Monday: Towards night John F. drew a few loads rocks from the garden where he heated and broke on Saturday. Patrick Rafter agreed to work eight months from the first of April for ten dollars per month. John F. says he will pay him for two months of the work.
Tuesday: I only tended to a few chores for I am quite lame. I took my one horse wagon and carried my wife to Alexander Ostrander’s on a visit and I returned home and my wife walked home at night.
Wednesday: Today Geo P. returned form Vermont, had bought one yoke of six year old oxen.
