1944 Willys Jeep Exhibit At The Memorial Day

May 28, 2010 By eastwickpress

The Hoosick Falls Veterans Memorial Wall Committee is proud to announce the exhibit of an original World War II Willys Jeep.  The Jeep along with trailer, armament and full gear will be on display at Wood Park on Monday, Memorial Day.  Jim McCormick, owner of the exhibit, will be on hand to tell the story of the Jeep. As World War II progressed, the Armed Services saw the need for a go-anywhere reconnaissance vehicle and sought bids from the industry. Ford built 277,896 GPW Jeeps and Willys built 335,531. Production was terminated in the summer of 1945 as World War II came to a close. The last Ford GPW was built July 30, 1945, and the last Willys rolled off the assembly line in Toledo on August 20, 1945. Today, approximately 1,000 original Jeeps built during this time period remain. All are welcome to stop and take a look at an original 1944 Willys before and after the Parade which kicks off at 10 am. Information will also be available on the progress of the Veterans Memorial Wall, and tickets for the “Scratch-Off” basket will be sold. For further information on the exhibit or the Veterans Memorial Wall, please contact one of the following committee members:  Bob Becker, Katie Bradley, Stan Brownell, Marilyn Douglas, Phil Leonard, Jerry McAuliffe, Harold Nichols, Bea Peterson or Walter Zwinge.
