Cornell Wrestling Team Visits HFCS

May 21, 2010 By eastwickpress

The Cornell University Wrestling Program will visit HFCS for a two day clinic on Saturday, June 12, and Sunday June 13. Regarded as one of the dominant programs in collegiate wrestling today, Cornell coaches and wrestlers will be working with local wrestlers in a hands-on clinic.
Cornell University finished 2nd in the NCAA 2010 as a team. This is the University’s best finish in history. Standout Freshman Kyle Dake (2010 NCAA Champion) is the special guest. Dake a six-time letter winner at Lansing High School in Ithaca, NY, was a two-time New York State champion and three-time finalist. He served as his team captain for four seasons and received the 2009 team Sportsmanship Award. Dake was also Male Athlete of the Year in 2007. He was a 2008 junior World Team member, and Dake is a three-time NHSCA Wrestling Champion.
Also attending is Cam Simaz. Prior to attending Cornell, Simaz, a three-time Division II Michigan state champion at 140, 160 and 189 pounds, is a Fila Cadet All-American with a 237-6 career record. Team captain his junior and senior seasons, he led Allegan Senior High to a team championship in 2007 and to second place in 2006. He was a member of the National Honor Society. At his first NCAA Tournament, Simaz earned All-America honors, placing seventh. Simaz went 3-0 at the EIWA tournament to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. He is the fifth-straight Big Red wrestler to earn Rookie of the Year honors and is the first Cornell wrestler over 150 pounds to ever capture the honor. Cam placed 3rd at the 2010 NCAA Tournament.
Accompanying the two wrestlers are two stand-out coaches from Cornell. Damion Hahn, a former two-time NCAA champion at Minnesota, has completed his third season with the Cornell staff as an assistant with the middle and heavyweight wrestlers. While at Cornell, Hahn has helped Cornell capture 12 All-America honors and 14 first-team All-Ivy selections. Also attending is three-time NCAA qualifier, Matt Azevedo. Coach Azevedo joins the Cornell Wrestling staff for his first season as a volunteer assistant coach, after spending the last seven campaigns as an assistant coach for Cal Poly.
The cost to attend the event is $40 per person. For further information, please contact Coach Chris Marsh at 518-268-9331 or by email at marshc@hoosickfallscsd.org.
