West Hoosick – Elizabeth Margaret (Betty) Nolan Luke, 85, died on Friday, April 30, 2010, at the Kingston Hospital in Kingston, NY. She had resided in West Hoosick, NY, and was the wife of the late F. Carlton Luke.
Elizabeth was born in 1925 on New Years Day, fourth child of the eight children of John F. and Birdie (Dailey) Nolan. She spent her early life on the family farm in Post Corners and attended the one room school there. She graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in Hoosick Falls, NY, at the age of 15 and went on to receive a business degree from Troy Business College. She worked in the office at H.P. Hood & Sons creamery in Eagle Bridge, NY, received training there as a lab technician, and managed the milk testing lab. While working at the creamery Betty met her future husband, Carlton, and they were married on August 28, 1949. In later years, she was the business manager of Lukeland Farms, operated by her husband and sons. She was a communicate of Immaculate Conception Parish in Hoosick Falls.
Betty was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a faith-filled, peaceful woman who committed her life to fostering a family full of love, support and happiness. Betty was a baseball fan, a master baker and loved her home and gardens in the “West Hills.” She was politically savvy and a follower of world news. Her generosity to her family, friends and neighbors knew no bounds.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary Anne Cushing of Buskirk, her five sons, Peter of New Baltimore, NY, Daniel of Shaftsbury, VT, Paul, Christopher and wife Nancy and Phillip, all of Hoosick Falls, NY, her grandchildren, Rebecca Atherton, Melissa Luke Ronin, Jessamyn and Benjamin Luke and Jonathan and Anna Luke, her great-grandchildren, Madeline, Nolan, Benjamin and Evan Atherton, Charlotte and Nathaniel Ronin and Mia Luke, her two sisters, Mary Nolan Austin of Cambridge, NY, and Katherine Nolan Gilchrist of Pittstown, NY, and a brother, William Nolan of Eagle Bridge. She was pre-deceased by two sisters, Ann Connor and Rita McCart, and two brothers, John F. Nolan and James L. Nolan, and an infant son, James William Luke.
A Mass of Christian burial was held at the Immaculate Conception Church on Wednesday, May 5, at 1 pm. Burial followed the service at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Cambridge, NY.
Relatives and friends called at the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main St. in Hoosick Falls on Tuesday from 5 to 8 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Academy through the funeral home.
