Geo P. Buys Maxon Farm

May 7, 2010 By eastwickpress

Tuesday, April 5, 1853: I went to R.A. Brown’s to town meeting and said R. A. Brown was elected supervisor. I voted for him. Joseph Tayer ran opposition on the Whig ticket. Today a hard snow storm. John F. did not go to town meeting.
Thursday: I this morning took my horse and wagon and carried my wife  and Charlotte up to Geo P.’s on a visit and fetched them home again at night. Today Geo P. bargained with Wm. B. Maxon to buy his farm and pay four thousand dollars, and the two and a half acres timber lot that his father holds is to be linked together a pasture.
Friday: I am quite lame. John Merrils came and scrubbed out the house that he has hired one year from the first of April.
Saturday: I continue to be lame. John F. took one yoke oxen and wagon over to John Merrils to move into my house near James M. Glasses, and John F. went to the vendue of Benonie Briggs but did not buy anything. Said John Merrils moved into my house today and is to pay 15 dollars for house and garden, one half in haying and the other half in walling and making shingle. This evening I paid up Patrick Rafferty up to the first day in April, I now paid him one dollar and 25 cts cash which makes 16 dollars and 25 cts in all of 3½ months.
Sunday: Towards night John F. went with his horse and wagon to East Nassau and John Merrils with him and fetched said Merrils’ wife’s sister Miss Calhoun and said Merrils paid John F. one dollar cash for going.
Monday: Today Wm. B. Maxon signed a title of his farm to Geo P. for the price of four thousand dollars.
Wednesday: Today Sylvenas Carpenter offered to hire the Harvey Wheeler farm to John F. and John F. walked to the west part of town to see Jonathan Harrington to come and hire the house but he could not come. Tonight Carpenter came to let John F. know that he has orders to sell said Wheeler farm.
Friday: I tended to carrying wood to John Merrils family and cording up their bedsteads and carrying them straw to put in their underbeds. I only charged 50 cts for the whole charging for the four days, the wood and straw included.
