Hilda Allen

May 14, 2010 By eastwickpress

Petersburgh – Hilda Susan Moon (Sisk) Allen died in her sleep on May 6, 2010, shortly after her 92nd birthday. The daughter of John H. Moon and Lena (Babcock) Moon, she was born in Petersburgh, NY, where her family had lived since 1784. She attended the Petersburgh village school and graduated as valedictorian from Hoosick Falls (NY) High School in 1935. She attended the Music School of the College of Fine Arts at Syracuse University, where she was a member of Alpha Xi Delta and Sigma Alpha Iota sororities.
In July 6, 1939, she married Dr. Henry L. Sisk and lived at various Army postings during his service in World War II. A daughter, Margaret Berry (Molly), was born in 1945. She divorced Dr. Sisk in 1946 and returned to Petersburgh. She taught in rural elementary schools from 1946 to 1950, when she married Henry P. Allen (Dartmouth ’44).
Hilda lived in Petersburgh until 1979. She served as Town Clerk, Town Historian, Election Inspector and founding Trustee of the Petersburgh Public Library. She lived in Bennington, VT, from 1979 to 2000 where she was active in St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, the Bennington Museum and the Old First Church. Her interest in genealogy led to the publication of two books – Families of Petersburgh and, with Doris L. Moon, Descendants of Robert Moone of Boston and Newport.
She entered Kendal in Hanover, NH, in May of 2000. Music was always an important part of her life, and she gave joy to many through her piano playing and singing. In later years she was almost totally blind but continued to play the piano whenever she could.
She was pre-deceased by Henry Allen, who died January 7, 1997. She is survived by her daughter, Margaret (Molly) Allen and her husband Stanley W. Brown of West Lebanon, NH, two step-granddaughters and three step-great-grandchildren. Services will be held in Petersburgh at a later date. Memorial gifts may be made to St. Barnabas Church, Norwich, VT, or the Petersburgh Public Library.
