Marion Schmich

Stephentown – Marion Emily Radershimer Schmich, 90, of Melbourne Place, Pittsfield, MA, formerly of Stephentown Center, NY, died on Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield under the care of Hospice Care of Western Massachusetts.
Born in Albany, NY, on November 11, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Walter E. Radenshimer and Mary Reynolds Radershimer Plunkett and step-daughter of the late Charlie Plunkett. She resided in Belleville, IL, and Albany as a young child. She married her late husband, George P. Schmich, on February 25, 1937, and resided in Stephentown Center for over 60 years before moving to Pittsfield in 2000. George died on July 19, 2001.
After starting their family, Marion was the Postmaster for the Stephentown Center Post Office for over 30 years before retiring on August 29, 1980 (when the post office closed). In retirement, she and her husband traveled extensively out west to visit their sons. She was a member of the National Association of Postmasters of the US organization until the time of her death. She enjoyed gardening, especially flowers, cooking, antiques and coin collecting.
Survivors include her children and their spouses, Joan K. Schmich and Richard Taikowski of Pittsfield, Georgiana M. Schmich and David Russo of Voorheesville, NY, Gerald W. “Jerry” and Jacqua Schmich of Loveland, CO, and Carl R. and Tanya Schmich of Saugus, CA, a nephew, Charles Janes of Boston, MA, a niece, Kathleen Iannauntoni of Killington, VT, and a cousin, Virginia Wittlich of Belleville, IL, along with 14 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by a sister, Dorothy Janes, and a grandson, John E. Taikowski.
Funeral services were on Monday, May 17, at 11 am in the Hall & Higgins Funeral Home, 457 NY 43, Stephentown, NY, where Rev. Trygve Tomlinson officiated. Burial followed in the Garfield Cemetery.
Relatives and friends were invited to the funeral home for visitation on Sunday from 4 to 7 pm.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Care of Western Massachusetts or the charity of one’s choice in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 9, Stephentown, NY. 12168.
