The Poestenkill Historical Society will meet Tuesday, May 25, at 7:30 pm in the Poestenkill Town Hall on Rt. 351. Art Dell will present a program on early stoneware. It is believed that the earliest pottery wares were hand-built and fired in bonfires. Firing times were short, but the peak temperatures achieved in the fire could be high, perhaps in the region of 900 degrees Celsius. Early bonfire-fired wares were made with rounded bottoms to avoid sharp angles that might be susceptible to cracking. Major types of pottery include earthenware, stoneware and porcelain. Pottery is one of the oldest human technologies and art forms and remains a major industry today.
The program is free, and the public is welcome. Refreshments will be provided by Joan Zwieg. For directions call Pat at 283-5223.
