The Tamakoce Wilderness Programs and the Friends of the Dyken Pond Center announce an “Into the Wilderness” Series this summer. This series will offer techniques in primitive outdoor living skills to sharpen your eye and hone your skills in a variety of day and weekend long programs. First in the series is a Camo-Camp on June 19 from 10 am until 4 pm. Learn how to make yourself invisible in the woods. You’ll discover many ways to conceal your movements, sounds, scent and your appearance in order to get closer to wildlife. The fee for this program is $30 per person, family rates are available. This program is open to all ages. Pre-registration is required and can be done by contacting the Center at 518 658-2055 or dykenpond@fairpoint.net.
Dan Yacobellis, instructor for the series, is a local tracker, naturalist and director of the Tamakoce Wilderness Programs. He has lived with the Native American Lakota people in South Dakota, where he learned native traditional skills such as brain tanning hides, hunting practices, bead and porcupine quillwork and tool and weapon construction. For the past 17 years, Yacobellis has been studying the ancient art of animal tracking both in formal educational settings and on his own in the forests of Grafton.
