Tuesday: July 26, 1853: Rainy. Today John F. went to Pittsfield with my horse and wagon and carried seven bushels new potatoes and sold them at 50 cts per.
Wednesday: I and Patrick dug potatoes and Mr. J. McFeelie dug 3/4 of a day and then it rained. Today John F. went to Lebanon with my horse and wagon and carried old potatoes and sold where they are to work on the railroad near the gate. He sold them at 25 cts per bushel.
Thursday: We dug potatoes, I and Patrick and John Merrils and J. McFeelie worked 3/4 of a day. They three mowed a spell towards night.
Friday: We hayed, I and John F. and Patrick and John Merrils and Jimmy McFeelie, and I paid said Jimmy McFeelie 50 cts cash for this afternoon’s work, and Geo P. helped us in the way of changing works.
Saturday: We hayed and finished haying excepting a little on the hill above the woods. Today John Merrils and J. McFeelie worked for me haying towards paying for house rent.
Monday: We hayed for Geo P. in the way of changing works, I and John F. and Patrick and John Merrils, and I credit said Merrils for house rent for the same. Some rainy towards night.
Tuesday: John F. did but little for he is unwell. Today cousin Capt Eliah Holcomb came to visit us and stayed, he is selling books, the History of his seafaring Life. Today some rainy.
Wednesday: I and John F. and Patrick dug potatoes, I am quite lame, I only picked up some small stones. Towards night I took my horse and wagon and went to Lebanon, I sold one bushel new potatoes to Wm Gay for 37 cts cash and I charged one bushel new potatoes to the shoe maker Quaid fifty cts, price agreed which makes one dollar and twenty five cts he now owes me for potatoes.
Thursday: Quite rainy and I am lame, towards night I walked down to the Pierce farm to see Miriam Newton for she is quite unwell. Cousin Eliah Holcomb remains with us, he is unwell and takes medicine.
Friday: This afternoon cousin Eliah Holcomb took my horse and wagon and my wife with him he went to the post office and Mr. Woodard’s.
Saturday: Tonight I paid Patrick Rafferty six dollars cash.
Monday: I and John F, and Patrick dug potatoes of mine in the young orchard on the hill, Louisa Merrils helped us, she picked up potatoes nearly half a day and I paid her eleven cts, quite a hard shower towards night.
