Grafton Lakes State Park will offer a Survival Skills Series this summer with monthly programs offered through August. Over the course of the summer, volunteer instructors will cover everything from lostproofing your children to making debris shelters in the woods. On Saturday, June 19, Grafton Lakes kicks off its Outdoor Survival Skills Series with “A Dozen Ways to Light A Fire Without Matches” at 2 pm.
While they say food, clothing and shelter are the necessities of life, primitive skills enthusiast and instructor Larry Montalto would also add fire. Fire warms us, cooks our food and comforts us. Building a fire under normal and extreme conditions is an important skill for any outdoor person. This workshop will demonstrate over a dozen ways to make fire without matches. It will interest the experienced outdoorsman and curious young people alike. This free class will be held at 2 pm on June 19 at the tent adjacent to Long Pond beach.
For more information about this and other summer programs at Grafton Lakes, please call 279-1155 or check the website at www.nysparks.com/parks. All vehicles are subject to an $8 per car fee which provides access to the beach and park for the day.
