Hoosick Grange News

Hoosick Grange met on May 26, with Master David Cornell. David Schmidt, our Grange Legislative Chairman, gave a report on the Legislative Conference, he attended. The conference was held in Albany County at Ravenna Grange. They met with New York State Grange Legislative Director Roger Halbert. He also had three or four politicians to answer questions and give their opinions on what’s going on in Albany. David gave a very good report.
Elsie and Mary Marpe were in charge of the Lecturer’s program. Mary read us an article on the New York State flower, the rose. Some of the roses originated in England and Europe. She told us 50% of roses sold are red and 60% are sold on Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day. The rose inspires people to write poems. Lord Byron wrote many famous poems. Elsie Marpe read three jokes and had a game on “How Observant Are You?” There were 30 questions, like on our flag is the top stripe red or white? Martha Babbitt won first prize. Elsie also had a picture game on flowers that was fun. They also had a skit with Marion and Omer Brenenstuhl taking part. Elsie read about Memorial Day. It’s a Federal holiday started in 1863 in honor of the dead by President Abraham Lincoln. She had a closing thought – God Bless our men and women who died fighting for freedom. She had a poem “Friendship.” Everyone thanked Elsie and Mary for a very informative program.
The Lecturer reminded everyone of our next meeting on June 9, at 8 pm. It’s a special meeting honoring Mr. Philip Leonard. We will also have our N.Y.S. Grange Overseer as our speaker. This is an open meeting, and everyone is welcome to attend.
