The Visitors’ Center at the Bennington Battlefield NYS Historic Site will be open on Sunday, August 15, from 1 to 4 pm, to mark the 233rd Anniversary of the Battle of Bennington. On Monday, August 16, at 6 pm, the American Legion of Hoosick Falls and other community members will hold a short ceremony commemorating the actual Battle Day on the top of the hill.
On Sunday, the Battle Gallery will be open to the public at no charge, where costumed interpreter Phyllis Chapman will give an interactive explanation of the events of the Battle, a large portion of which took place on the grounds of the Visitors’ Center. Reproduction British and American Revolutionary uniforms will be on display, as well as facsimiles of the equipment and weaponry carried by enlisted men and officers. Peter Schaaphok, of the Brigade of the American Revolution, a re-enactor’s group, will be on site to perform outdoor demonstrations of musket firing.
On Monday, the American Legion of Hoosick Falls invites community members to participate in a brief commemorative ceremony at the top of the hill at 6 pm. A re-enactor will read General Stark’s account of the Battle, and the American Legion of Hoosick Falls will perform a flag ceremony.
The Bennington Battlefield is open daily from 10 am to 7 pm through Labor Day. The Visitors’ Center is open only for this special event. The Visitors’ Center is located on Caretaker’s Road, in Walloomsac, NY, off Rte. 67, just opposite the main entrance to the upper grounds of the site. It is situated on the Walloomsac River, and visitors will have an improved view of the river, as well as the opportunity to view a 200 year old sycamore tree on its bank.
