Fat Offers For Fat Oxen

Monday, January 16, 1854: John F. went to Pittsfield with my horse and lumber wagon and carried 12½ bushels of apples and a quarter of his beef and sold at 5½ dollars per hundred and sold the apples at 75 cts per bushel. He had three dollars for his share of the apples and I had six dollars for my share of the apples.
Tuesday: This afternoon I rode with Geo P.  to the Antirent meeting to the school house near Mr. H. Platt’s. Stephen Van Rensselaer Jolls was chosen president and Henry Platt was chosen secretary.
Thursday: Towards night I took my horse and wagon and rode over to Russel Palmer and he came and doctored a sick ox for Geo P.
Saturday: Today one Mr. Rider from Chatham called and offered 160 dollars for John F. fat oxen.
Thursday: I looked over my accounts with A. Bartlett and my account was 40 dollars and 82 cents and his account was 51 dollars and I objected to his adding in 18 dollars to make out the 51 dollars. The 18 dollars is his charge for ironing the gearing to a one horse wagon, I offered to have other men say what it was worth to iron said gearing and we left it to further consideration. Today Charlotte E. went to Hancock with us and carried butter and egg and exchanged for groceries to the Union store, the butter at 18 cts per pound and eggs at 18 cts per dozen, got in exchange sugar, tea, molasses, and raisons.
Tuesday: I tended to chores and John F. drove his fat oxen to Lebanon to have them weighed, and one weighed 2000 and the other weighed 1750.
Wednesday, Feb. 1: My two sons drew ice from Conklins mill pond and put into Geo P.’s ice house. They went with two teams horse and ox team, they drew on sled and wagon. They got five loads. Today Milo Bull came and offered John F. for his fat oxen 170 dollars and 50 dollars for his fat steer and fat heifer. Today Edward the Irishman sawed up ice and helped load ice for Geo P.
