August 13, 2010 By eastwickpress

Let’s Make Bubbles!!
On Saturday, August 14, at 11 am the Scotia-Glenville Children’s Museum will bring a variety of bubble-makers and everything it takes to fill the air with shimmering spheres of every imaginable size. Wear your beach clothes and join us on the Library deck and lawn as we create beautiful bubbles just for fun.
Grant Writing
Come to the Library for the workshop, “How to Write a Grant,” on Tuesday, August 17, at 6 pm. This one hour workshop will provide guidance on development of a statement of need, addressing the funder’s priorities and creating program descriptions, budgets and evaluation plans. This workshop is ideal for representatives of organizations that would like to learn how to find or write grants as well as individuals who want to enhance their resumés by adding these valuable skills.
Water: The Vital Element
No one can survive long without water. On Wednesday, August 18, at 1 pm Dyken Pond Environmental Education Center representatives will teach us about the importance of clean water and the water cycle. Children will make a simple rain stick to take home. Reservations are requested.
Learn About Chickens And Eat Locally
Bar None Ranch in Berlin raises pastured chicken and lamb, without antibiotics and growth hormones. Their chickens are fed grass and locally grown grain. They are coming to the Stephentown Memorial Library on Thursday, August 19, at 6:30 pm for a special educational program for all ages that will explain how chickens are raised. Chickens will be on hand for children to pet and handle also.
As an additional bonus, Bar None Ranch has partnered with SML to sell locally grown chicken meat to area residents as a fund raiser for the Library. You can pre-order chickens from Bar None Ranch at the Library now and pick them up on the 19th at the program. Payment is due on delivery. A portion of the sales will benefit the Library.
Only whole chickens are sold, and they are priced by the pound. The more chickens you buy, the lower the price per pound: 1-4 birds = $4 per lb., 5-11 birds = $3.75 per lb., 12+ birds = $3.50 per lb. The chickens are between 3 and 7 lbs. each. Fill your freezer! Supplies are limited.
Computers For Beginners
On Friday, August 20, from 10 am to 12 pm Farid Gruber will help new computer users understand how to use their computers and get connected to the internet. If you know someone who will benefit from this class, help spread the word and invite them to join.
Creative Paper Making
Recycling can be fun and beautiful. Join us on Monday, August 23, at 1 pm and learn how used paper can be recycled – but don’t stop there! Add other natural fibers such as flower petals, yarns and threads to create handmade paper with the artwork built right in. All materials will be provided, just bring your creativity. Class size is limited. Please call ahead to reserve your space for this unique workshop.
Storytelling Evening With Frank-Lee Speaking
Bring the whole family on Tuesday, August 24, at 6:30 pm for this fun evening of stories for all ages. Dee Ellen Lee and Frank Wind have worked with senior citizens and for mental health organizations. They have been applauded for their ability to hold the attention, educate and captivate their audience. They perform storytelling concerts and storytelling work-shops for children, family audiences and adults and are members of National Storytelling Network and the Story Circle of the Capital District.
This visit will kick off our exciting “Tell Me About It” Oral History Project which will focus on 10 local seniors to be selected to tell us their stories and work with local youth and Frank-Lee Speaking to bring their tales alive in the form of podcasts and printed books that will be shared with the community. If you know someone who would be interested in participating, please ask them to call the Library and let us know. We will be selecting our seniors within the next month to begin this project.
All events are free and open to the public. Events will be at the Stephentown Memorial Library, 472 State Route 43 in Stephentown. For more information, call the Library at 518-733-5750 or check our website at www.stephentownLibrary.org.
