Cherry Plain – William Hammersmith, 79, of Watson Road, Cherry Plain, NY, died on Friday, August 13, 2010, at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, MA, after being stricken at home.
Born April 18, 1931, he was the son of the late Joseph and Alfreda Gagnon Hammersmith. He was the loving husband of the former Beatrice A. Rodda, whom he married in Poestenkill, NY, on April 14, 1951.
Bill attended Berlin schools and worked for the Rutland Railroad in earlier years.
He was employed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in law enforcement in both Rensselaer County and the Lake George region. He retired in 1968 after an injury. He did carpentry work in the area building many local homes. Bill also helped his son with his business. At the time of his death, Bill had bought and sold antiques, coins and guns for many years. He enjoyed hunting turkey and deer, fishing, trapping and was an excellent taxidermist.
Survivors include his wife, Beatrice, his son, William J. Hammersmith, his daughter-in-law, Lisa, and grandson, Anthony, all of Cherry Plain, his siblings, Joseph Hammersmith of Berlin, NY, and Theresa Williamson and David Hammersmith, both of Stephentown, NY, along with many nieces and nephews. He is pre-deceased by siblings Alfreda Gardner, Mary Scouller and John Hammersmith.
A funeral service was held on Tuesday, August 17, at 2 pm in the Hall & Higgins Funeral Home, 457 NY 43, Stephentown, where Rev. Trygve Tomlinson officiated. Burial followed in the Stephentown Cemetery.
Relatives and friends were invited to visitation on Tuesday from 12:30 until 2 pm. Bill asked that you please omit flowers. If you would like to remember him in a special way, memorial contributions may be made to the Berlin Rescue Squad.
