HFCS Varsity Field Hockey Wins Tournament

September 10, 2010 By eastwickpress

by Bea Peterson
It was not an easy victory. On Friday, September 3, HFCS Varsity Field Hockey began its season with the Annual Hoosick Falls Tournament. HF played Mt. Anthony of Bennington and finally won, 1-0, in sudden death double overtime. The goal was scored by Amanda Lewsey, assisted by Samantha Skott.
Coach Denise Campbell said, “Hoosick Falls had many opportunities to win the game in regulation, but the Mt. Anthony defense did a great job blocking our shots. We had 21 shots on goal to their one. HF goalie Frankie Pearson only had to make that one save for the day.”
Championship Game
On Saturday, September 4, HF played Columbia High School of East Greenbush for the Tournament Championship. Hoosick Falls was the victor, 2-1. Karley Morin scored the first goal with 7:38 minutes left in the first half. With 4:11 minutes left Samantha Skott scored.

With the ball in the air and sticks coming at it from all angles, Ashley Costantino, center, does everything she can to get the ball into the goal. Amanda Lewsey, Samantha Skott and Hailey Bugbee (l to r), are poised to score on a loose ball. Coach Campbell said, “Once again we dominated the game. We had 13 shots on goal; Columbia had zero. We had a lot of opportunities to score, but we just couldn’t finish. Overall play by Karley Morin, Carsen Williams and Amanda Vitro on defense helped our team control the majority of both games.
There was no consolation game due to scheduling issues. Mt. Anthony will play Columbia at a later date.
Members of the All Star Team were Brenna Elwell and Samantha Strubel from Mt. Anthony, Courtney Diverage and Erin Boyle from Columbia and Samantha Skott and Carsen Williams from Hoosick Falls. Williams was Tournament MVP.
