Joan Knapton

East Nassau – Joan Eleanor Cserne Knapton, loving wife, mother, grandmother and a longtime resident of East Nassau, NY, died Saturday, August 28, 2010, from complications after a long battle with multiple sclerosis.
She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Vilma Szalay Cserne of Massapequa Park, NY. She is survived by her husband, Dean, her daughters, Amy Cornell and husband Wayne of Hoosick Falls, NY, and Cathy Sweeney and husband Dave of Aurora, CO, her grandchildren, Tyler and Jeffrey Brewer and Michael and Sadie Cornell, her sister, Arlene Koster and husband Fred of Ballston Spa, NY, her brother, Robert Cserne of Massapequa Park, and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Knapton was a member of the Brainard United Methodist Church, NY, and the Tamarac Twirlers Square Dance Club. She was a 4-H leader and involved in Cooperative Extension. She enjoyed crafts, needlework and flower gardening. Mrs. Knapton received her undergraduate education in secondary Education from the State University College at Oswego and her Master’s Degree in Reading from the University at Albany, SUNY. She worked as a teacher’s aide and substitute teacher and for the 1990 Census.
Services were held at the Thomas P. Mooney Funeral Home in Nassau, NY, on Tuesday, August 31, and interment was in East Nassau Cemetery.
