The Stephentown Youth Commission Summer Camp concluded its six weeks of camp on Tuesday, August 10, with a visit from the Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department.
Following a summer safety program several weeks ago conducted by the SVFD, the kids drew up safety posters. About 40 children participated. The Fire Department gave $25 cash awards to three winners, one in each age group. The winners were Annie Cass, Matthew Brown and Lauren Meyers. Every child who was in the program received a gift certificate for a free ice cream cone donated by Stewart’s Shops.

After presentation of the awards the children joined together as a team to hold a fire hose that stretched across the Stephentown Elementary School field. Everyone got a chance to operate the nozzle while Bill Jennings pumped from B36 and Luis Rodriguez manned the nozzle with each kid. Danielle Hoffman made sure everyone kept in line and got their turn moving forward.
“The children seemed to get a real blast out of the program,” said. Assistant Chief Rik McClave. “Thanks to everyone who helped in the very, very difficult task of choosing the poster winners. And we really have to support Stewart’s as they have been very supportive of all the local volunteer organizations for many years.”
