Hoosick Falls Girls Soccer Ends Season With Big Win

October 22, 2010 By eastwickpress

by Julie Luciano
The varsity girls’ soccer team ended their league play with a bang with a 6-0 win over Granville. It was their last home game and the girls’ senior game.  The team will be graduating six seniors, Brooke Sargood, Alexis Hagadorn, Deanna Dubois, Amber Luke, Mary Luke and Kristin Bird.  “We will all miss the seniors of this year; it will feel like a part of the team is missing,” Emily Everard said. Although there are six seniors this year, the girls have a young team and have a great amount of potential coming up behind the seniors.  Currently on the team there are many sophomores and freshmen and even a couple junior high players. It is hoped that the younger players can fill the holes next season.

The team started the senior game by scoring two goals within a few minutes. Maritza Gonzalez had a breakaway for a goal two minutes in and shortly after that she had another goal with an assist from Meaghan McKee. Grace Delurey added to the score with two header goals with an assist from Gonzalez and the other from Alice Hayden. McKee also helped by adding two goals with an assist from Gonzalez. McKee’s other goal came from her own breakaway from about 10 yards past the half line in the second half.  Late into the second half Coach Tom Husser made an unexpected switch by putting senior Alexis Hagadorn in goal. “It was incredibly nerve racking, but I had faith in my defense,” Hagadorn commented about her new position. “All I could think was ‘keep it out of the goal.’”

The Panthers have one last league game Thursday, October 21 against Hoosic Valley (the current first place team). If they beat Hoosic Valley the Panthers will win the league championship. “If we win, we will make a big statement by winning the league two years in a row, and it will also give us a better spot for our sectional ranking,” said Everard.
