Hoosick Grange News

Hoosick Grange met on September 22. The Lecturer’s program was on first. Charles Filkins was in charge. The title of the program was Hoosick Churches. Charles had a picture board of the many churches. The Gilead Lutheran Church was one of the first churches started. In Mapletown the First Baptist Church was started. In 1851 the first Catholic Church, called St. Mary’s or Immaculate Conception, was started. St. Mark’s Episcopal Church was started in 1860. It had a mission church called St. John. Buskirk at one time had four churches. That was a lot of churches for a small area. In Hoosick Falls on the corner of Church St. and John St. in a building’s upper floor was a synagogue. Then there is All Saints Episcopal Church in Hoosick. They also had a mission church in Boyntonville and Raymerville. In 1843 the West Hoosick Church was started and the Union Church in 1845. The Methodist Church is still going in Eagle Bridge, and its minister is Mr. John Patten. There is the Assembly of God Church in North Hoosick. In 1953 in West Hoosick the Adventist Church burned. The next day the West Hoosick Fire Department was started. There were pictures of the First United Presbyterian Church, the North Hoosick United Methodist Church, the Community Alliance Church and also the Community Center that was a church at one time. It was all very interesting. The Lecturer thanked Charles for a very informative program. After the program the Grange had a little business meeting,
At our next meeting on October 13, Helen Filkins is in charge of the program. Edna and Allen Cornell are in charge of refreshments. The Grange closed with delicious refreshments provided by Mary Remancus and Louise Ciuk.
