Hooskip Dairy Farm Tour

October 15, 2010 By eastwickpress

On Saturday, October 23, at 1 pm, join the Agricultural Stewardship Association (ASA) and the Rensselaer Land Trust (RLT) for a tour of the 100 cow Hooskip Farm dairy operation run by the McMahon family. This is a wonderful opportunity to see the inner workings of a small, family-owned, dairy farm in an absolutely beautiful landscape. The stunning 716 acre farm straddles the Vermont border at the foot of the Taconics in Petersburgh. The farm is located along the Hoosick River, and Skiparee Mountain rises in its northeast corner, hence the name Hooskip.  The McMahons have conserved 317 acres in Vermont with the Vermont Land Trust and will protect the remaining 345 acres in New York with ASA in 2010.
Contact Fran Egbert of RLT at 674-3214 for directions.
The Agricultural Stewardship Association is a community-supported land trust dedicated to protecting farmland in Rensselaer and Washington Counties from encroaching development, with a goal to protect 20,000 acres by the end of 2015 and to ensure a future for agriculture in these counties. Find more information  at www.agstewardship.org.
Rensselaer Land Trust has protected over 600 acres of lands throughout Rensselaer County that protect sources of drinking water, serve as natural habitats for wildlife and maintain the scenic and rural character of the community. For more information, visit RLT at www.renstrust.org.
