The Storm Rolls Through
by Bea Peterson
Sunday, October 3, a New England Football Semi-pro League playoff game between the Rampage of Central Vermont and the Southern Vermont Storm was held at the HFCS Ken Baker Field. The Storm is made up of players from Bennington, Fair Haven, Jacksonville, Manchester, Pownal and Sandgate, VT, Lanesborough, North Adams and Williamstown, MA, and Johnsonville, Troy, Shushan and Valley Falls, NY. It is also made up of Alex Hansen, Jeffery Hunt, Sean Lennon, Shawn Morrison, Warren O’Grady, Don Skott, Gregg Stroffoleno and Francis Tilley, III of Hoosick Falls and William Telford of White Creek.
Last week’s deluge of rain left the football field too soggy for the originally planned Saturday night matchup. Beautiful sunny weather on Sunday made it a great afternoon for football!
The local boys didn’t disappoint as the Storm blew over the Rampage 24-6. The Storm (7-2) will face the Southern New Hampshire Wolfpack next weekend in the NEFL second round playoff game.
On Sunday the bulk of the scoring was in the first half. It started when Wide Receiver Mike Watters of Bennington grabbed a Rampage punt and took it 60 yards for six points. Jim Fischer’s 26 yard field goal put the Storm up 10 early in the second quarter.
Then Watters caught a good one from quarterback Sean Lennon to go 31 yards for the touchdown. With 1:06 left the Rampage got on the board making the half time score 17-6. One more Storm TD in the second half cinched it for Southern Vermont.
