Berlin Central High School students Caitlyn Hungerford and Emily Olson have been selected for the 2010 New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Zone 7 Area All-State Festival.
“Caitlyn and Emily,” said Cathie Allain, Berlin High School’s Principal, “were selected based on their NYSSMA All-State Audition scores from among students in over 50 school districts in seven NY counties.”

One of the students’ teachers at Berlin, Jean Kirsch, said, “This is the fifth consecutive year that Berlin High School students have been selected to Area All-State since they began participating in All-State auditions in 2006. In 2007 and 2009, Berlin students were selected for the Conference All-State Festival held at the NYSSMA Conference in Rochester, NY.”
NYSSMA is a professional organization that evaluates student musicians in New York State from elementary school to high school. Each spring, thousands of students register through their school music programs to attend NYSSMA Evaluation Festivals where they are adjudicated. These festivals take place at local high schools within the fifteen NYSSMA zones, each of which covers an area in New York State.
Caitlyn will be singing the Soprano part in the Area All-State Chorus. Emily will be playing the Flute in the Area All-State Band.
They will prepare their music under the guidance of Berlin teachers Dan Byron and Ms. Kirsch before attending two days of rehearsal and a performance on Saturday, November 20, in Saratoga Springs.
