A Good Price For Potatoes

Wednesday July 26, 1854: I and Michael Lynch and Thomas dug potatoes. John F. hand is lame, he does not work.
Thursday: I and Thomas plowed a little with my horse and I sowed turnip. John F. went with his two horse team to Pittsfield with 12 bushel potatoes at one dollar to Barker’s factory.
Friday: I went to Pittsfield with my horse and wagon and sold 12 bushel potatoes for 12 dol and I paid four dol and 87 cts for half a barrel super fine flour and one dol for 12½ pounds of mackerel and 37 cts for one cod fish and I engaged 12 bushel potatoes tomorrow to Cooley and on the way home I paid to N. Nichols store 50 cts for one pint French Brandy.
Saturday: I went to Pittsfield with the 12½ bushel potatoes to Cooley and got my cash 12½ dollars. This evening John F. drove Geo P. horse load potatoes for him to Hull and called to Dr. Bates to see if his hand wanted doing up or dressing. The doctor said he would call tomorrow as he was passing.
Sunday: Dr. Bates called and John F. paid him 25 cts to dress his hand.
Monday: We hayed and drew hay with my young oxen. The third load bothered the oxen for the yoke did not fit and I left the load down from the barn. This afternoon John F. went to Squ Wm Hands to answer  to his notice or summons against Edgar Brown concerning house rent. When he returned he went to Lebanon to Squ H. Bull for council.
Tuesday, August 1: I went to Pittsfield to Cooley’s with 13 bushels potatoes at one dollar per and got the cash.
Wednesday: This forenoon we dug potatoes on the Rodgers farm and this afternoon I went to Pittsfield to Cooley with 14½ bushels potatoes at one dol per bushel. Got home at 11 o’clock tonight.
Friday: Some rainy. This afternoon I went to Pittsfield with my horse and wagon and carried Cooley 16 bushels of potatoes at one dollar. This forenoon John F. and Geo P. went to Squ Hands to John’s court.
Sunday: My two sons rode to Chatham to the Feeral Stoes to see Squ Horatio Right. My wife and Charlotte E went to the Chapel to Elder Hawks’ farewell discourse.
