by Jen Burhans
Ten Berlin Middle/High School Fall sports teams were honored Wednesday with certificates and awards. Athletic Director Art Schmich started the program by thanking all his coaches, bus drivers, maintenance workers and the parents for a well run season.
Volleyball
Coach Kayla Murdie recognized the efforts of her girls JV volleyball players with certificates of participation. Varsity volleyball coach Paul Slaver commended his team for their hard work and is hopeful that more girls will continue to come out for the volleyball teams. The honor of Most Improved Player (MIP) went to Liz Schatz and the Most Valuable Player (MVP) to Shaylah Morris who was also a CHVL 1st team All- Star.
Cross-Country
The Cross-Country boys and girls Modified coach Katelyn Klobus was pleased with the progress the teams made and commented that there was an increase in her numbers this year. Varsity coach Rick Ingraham had a lengthy report to give as this was a big year for his runners. He was proud of all the athletes and said their first year in a new league went great. Many members of the teams made the WASAREN league All-Star teams including; Kayleigh Corrado, Rocco Farano, Alex French, Conner Hoyt, Llew Palmer and Erik Viner. As in other years, coach Ingraham had a hard time being limited to only one athlete per team for MIP honors but selected AnneMarie Guerdan and Doug Hoard for their persistence. His MVP selections were easier. He picked Lydia Shorter and Llew Palmer, as both athletes were outstanding workers.
Girls Soccer
The Girls Modified coach, Trish Weber, had only positive comments about her 26 players. JV Coach Karen Day commented that the girls worked well together and that her first year coaching this team was a good experience. She mentioned players that had stepped up to fill gaps left by players moving up to the varsity.
The Girls Varsity team treated the audience to a video presentation of highlights of their year. Coach Fleda Berschwinger proudly presented the team as the CHVL champions, the result of a near perfect season. Rachael Bly and Maria Gordon were selected as Second Team All-Stars. Tegan Shumway was the coach’s pick for MIP. Coach Berschwinger honored both Brittany Spaniol and Rachel Ferris as her MVPs. Spaniol was selected for the CHVL First All-Star team. Ferris was a First Team All-Star and was honored with the CHVL MVP award.
Boys Soccer
The program wrapped up with the presentations to the Boys soccer program. Ray Nelson, coach of the Modified team, was impressed with the teamwork and hustle of his guys this year. Coach Jen Burhans commented on the winning season the JV team put together with the small but efficient numbers they carried. Art Schmich, the varsity coach, considered this a building year and reminded the players to keep up their hard work as he looked forward to next year. Tucker Connally made the Second Team All-Stars. Coach Schmich awarded the MIP to his hard working goalie Philip Bruns, who was also a First team All-Star. Sakan Sadowski also a First Team All-Star was awarded the MVP for his hard work in the midfield and dominating play on defense.
The award ceremony was concluded with snacks and beverages in the cafeteria.

The MVP and MIP winners of the Falls Sports Awards on Wednesday, November 10, are (l-r): AnneMarie Guerdan, Liz Schatz, Lydia Shorter, Llew Palmer, Doug Hoard, Phil Bruns, Sakan Sadowsky, Tegan Shumway, Brittany Spaniol and Rachel Ferris. Photo by Jen Burhans.
