Hannaford Supermarkets announced today that it has signed a lease agreement with the owner of the Valley Plaza Shopping Center for a new store in New Lebanon. The full service supermarket and pharmacy will be built next door to the Route 20 plaza that contains the former New Lebanon Supermarket.
The store will feature an extensive Organic & Natural offering, a butcher shop, produce and seafood departments, a bakery and a deli and a full service pharmacy.
“We’re excited to bring a Hannaford Supermarket and Pharmacy to the New Lebanon area,” said Hannaford spokesman Matt Paul. “The residents of this area have been without a supermarket for some time, and we look forward to providing the region’s residents and visitors with an easy-to-shop store that offers a range of fresh, high quality foods at great value plus the convenience of a pharmacy.”
The proposed store would employ approximately 65 associates, Paul said.
Last year Hannaford was named one of America’s ten healthiest supermarkets by Health magazine. Its stores offer a large selection of natural and organic products, including produce from local farms through the company’s Close to Home program. All Hannaford stores also use Guiding Stars, an easy to use system that guides customers to foods with good, better and best nutritional value.
Hannaford additionally has a reputation for environmental stewardship. In July 2009, the company opened the world’s most environmentally advanced supermarket in Augusta, ME. The U.S. Green Building Council awarded the store Platinum LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, the USGBC’s highest standard.
Hannaford will apply many of those principles at the New Lebanon store, such as the use of energy efficient lighting and refrigeration systems.
“We’ll also emphasize recycling cardboard, plastic and other materials in our daily operations – as we do in every Hannaford location – to increase efficiency and reduce environmental impact,” Paul said.
The store will be built on the site of the Capital District Regional Off-Track Betting Corp., which will move into the former New Lebanon Supermarket building.
