Stephentown – Jim Dwyer of Stephentown, NY, died suddenly at home on Wednesday, November 10, 2010, at the age of 73. Born in Flint, MI, on August 8, 1937, he was the only child of George Edwin and Mary Delight Dwyer. His family later moved to Kansas City, MO, where he attended Southwest High School.
Following his studies at Northwestern University School of Speech, Jim moved to New York City to pursue a career in theatre, and there met his future wife, Jane Broadus. He married her in 1961 in Manhattan, KS, and their two daughters were born at Fort Carson, CO, while Jim served in the U.S. Army Special Services. During the years that followed, while working professionally in the New York theatre with such luminaries as Jerome Robbins, Alan Arkin, Morgan Freeman and Jane Whitehill, Jim pursued a second career as a wordsmith, which eventually developed into a full time vocation as a writer and editor for Reader’s Digest General Books.
Jim made Stephentown his home in 1981, though he continued to commute to work in New York City until his retirement in 1996. He was an avid reader and an active member of the Stephentown Seniors as well as a loving and beloved father and grandfather.
He is pre-deceased by Jane, in April, 2004, and is survived by his two daughters and their husbands, Dr. Peri Lynn Dwyer and Steve Worrell of Tallahassee, FL, and Karli Rita Dwyer and Paul Gannon of Nassau, NY, and by five grandchildren, Kyrie, Amanda, Maya, Benjamin and Orion. Donations in his memory would be welcomed by the Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 208, Stephentown, NY, 12168, who were there for him. A memorial visitation will be held at the Stephentown Volunteer Fire Hall, Grange Hall Road, Stephentown, on Sunday, November 21, from 2 to 4 pm.
