ProtectION⊕™ From Performance Plastics

November 19, 2010 By eastwickpress

The Composites Division of Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics (SGPPL) in Hoosick Falls recently introduced ProtectION⊕™, a series of products designed to protect lithium-ion cells from hazards that can negatively affect battery performance.
ProtectION⊕™ high performance foams, sponges and substrates are available for prismatic and cylindrical Li-ion battery packs. These products protect cells from vibration, overheating or other conditions that can compromise cell efficiency, life and operational safety.
“We have been working with industry leaders for approximately two years to optimize these performance solutions for mobile battery packs,” said Steven Jette, Business Development Manager for Saint-Gobain. “These products address the critical safety and performance issues we identified, specifically heat dissipation, electrical isolation, pouch cell expansion, external vibration mitigation and environmental sealing.”
Saint-Gobain Performance Plastic materials have been successfully serving the electric vehicle market since 2008. Users include both major and niche automotive manufacturers. The new ProtectION⊕™ series was unveiled during ECARTec 2010, Germany’s international trade fair for electric mobility.
SGPPL is part of Saint-Gobain’s Innovative Materials Sector, with more than 60,000 employees in 45 countries. Saint-Gobain is a global manufacturer and distributor of flat glass, building products, glass containers and high performance materials. Saint-Gobain has operations in 64 countries and employs over 190,000 people.
Founded in 1665 to manufacture glass for the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles, Saint-Gobain remains headquartered in Paris, France, and had worldwide sales of $53 billion in 2009.
