Osborne Y. Gaines

December 17, 2010 By eastwickpress

Hoosick – Osborne Y. “Doc” Gaines, 84, a resident of Emmons Road, Hoosick, NY, died unexpectedly Saturday morning, December 11, 2010, at his home. Born in Easton, PA, on June 25, 1926, Gaines was the son of Carl and Eleanor (Yellott) Gaines. He was married to the former Harriet Emmons in Bennington, VT, on June 25, 1949.
He grew up in Easton where he attended local schools. Following high school he entered  the US Navy  during World War II, where he served on the aircraft carrier Bon Homme Richard. He later graduated from Oswego College with a teaching degree. In earlier years Mr. Gaines worked on the family farm, Breezy Hill Farm. He had been a Surge Milking Equipment dealer and had been a field agent for the Rensselaer County Soil and Water Conservation Department. For many years he had been an Industrial Arts teacher at Mt. Anthony Junior High School; he later worked at the Bennington Pottery. He was a devoted and committed lay leader of the First Baptist Church of Bennington, where he worked diligently to preserve the Church and make it prosper.
One summer he brought his family to a Navajo Indian reservation in Arizona where he learned the art of carving and shaping in sandstone. Since there is not much sandstone in this area he used wood and became an accomplished wood carver and sold many of his carvings at Camelot Village, at area farmers markets, along with his wife’s crafts, and to many vendors in the northeast. He also enjoyed photography and would often turn pictures into carvings. He liked maple sugaring and leather working and traveled extensively with his family during the summers, visiting 49 states.
Mr. Gaines leaves his wife, Harriet of Hoosick Falls, his son and daughter-in-law, Benjamin and Calli Gaines of Hoosick Falls, his grandchildren, Carl, April, Cody, Justin and Tyler Gaines, and a great-granddaughter. He is pre-deceased by a son, Chris Gaines, who died on April 30, 2007, a daughter, Barbara Benner, who died on March 15, 1981, and a sister, Neil Brighton.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 20, at 11 am at the First Baptist Church of Bennington with the Reverend Jerrod Hugenot, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the family lot in Bennington Village Cemetery. Friends may call at the First Baptist Church on Sunday from 2 to 4 pm when the family will be present. Memorial gifts in memory of Mr. Gaines may be made to the First Baptist Church in care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, 213 West Main Street, Bennington, VT, 05201.
