Robert K. Shiland

Hoosick Falls – Robert Kyle “Tinker” Shiland, 83, passed away on Thursday, December 2, 2010, at the Hoosick Falls Health Center where he had resided for the last two years. He was the husband of Beatrice “Bea” (Simmons) Shiland of Carey Avenue, Hoosick Falls, NY.
Born on October 16, 1927, in Cambridge, NY, Robert was the son of the late Stanley and Helen (Dwyer) Shiland. He was educated at St. Mary’s Academy and Hoosick Falls High School. Robert served in the United States Navy. He was the plant manager for Albany International, first in Hoosick Falls and later in Menands, NY, until retiring. He then worked for Upsy Daisy Florist and the Mahar Funeral Home, both in Hoosick Falls.
Tinker enjoyed sports and was the basketball coach at St. Mary’s Academy for several years. He also served as the Town of Hoosick Supervisor, as Town Justice and on the Hoosick Falls Village Board. He was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church.
Tink was a kind, gentle, loving man who loved life, family and friends. Most of all he enjoyed time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors, other than his wife Bea, include his daughters, Kyle A. Shiland of Rensselaer, NY, and Carol Holzhauer and husband Tim of Hoosick, NY, and his son, Robert P. Shiland of Cambridge. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Robert is pre-deceased by his first wife, Peg (Conway) Shiland, his son-in-law, Joseph Galvagni, and his brothers, Harry and William Shiland.
Relatives and friends were invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, December 6, at 10 am from the Immaculate Conception Church on Main Street in Hoosick Falls. Burial followed the Mass at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Calling hours were Sunday at the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street in Hoosick Falls, from 3 to 6 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to either St. Mary’s Academy, the Hoosick Falls Health Center or the Town of Hoosick Rescue Squad through the funeral home.
