Donald S. Hewitt Jr.

Petersburgh – Donald Seward Hewitt, Jr., 72, of Route 22, Petersburgh, NY, died on Wednesday, February 9, 2011, at the White River Junction VA Medical Center in White River Jct., VT.
Born June 14, 1938, in Petersburgh, he was the son of the late Donald S. and Lydia Quackenbush Hewitt. A lifelong resident of Petersburgh, Don graduated from Hoosick Falls High School and was a member of the Petersburgh Baptist Church. He worked on the family farm before joining the United States Army in 1962. After his honorable discharge, he was with the Army Reserve. Don worked for over 30 years with Conrail in Selkirk, NY, as an inspector, retiring in 2005. He was a 44-year member of the Petersburgh Volunteer Fire Department. Don enjoyed bowling at Barbecue Recreation in Hoosick Falls, NY, and was a member of the Hoosick Grange. His passion was gardening. Don could be found in his garden or at his roadside shed selling his vegetables.
Survivors include his children, Karen M. and husband Mike Donato of Averill Park, NY, Barbara R. Hewitt of Petersburgh and Beth E. Hewitt of Troy, NY, his siblings, David W. Hewitt of Petersburgh, Helen Brown of Stephentown, NY, and Harriet Peabody of Cambridge, NY, his grandchildren, Paul Hewitt Horton, Kayla Tyree, Patricia Knapp and Samuel Donato, along with nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends were invited to the Thomas M. Barber Funeral Home, 66 Armsby Road, Petersburgh, on Tuesday, February 15, for visitation from 4 to 8 pm. Following cremation, he will be placed in the columbarium wall in the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery. Memorial services will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the family would be greatly appreciated and may be made through the funeral home at P.O. Box 361, Petersburgh, NY, 12138.
