Grafton Lakes State Park will be offering two winter break programs while the kids are off from school this coming week. Backyard Birding on February 19 and Animal Tracks & Traces on February 23 will get the whole family outside for some winter fun. The Park is also open daily from 8 am to 4:30 pm and free to access, with trails in great shape for snowshoeing or snowmobiling.
Time is running out to register for Backyard Birding with Bob Davis. On Saturday, February 19, at 11 am, Davis will share the basics of backyard birding and birdfeeding in winter. Participants will also join in the Great Backyard Bird Count, a national effort to monitor bird species in winter from year to year. Children can make a simple pine cone birdfeeder to take home. The program costs $2 per person. Please pre-register by calling 279-1155.
On Wednesday, February 23, at 10 am, the Park educator will teach how to be an animal detective with “Animal Tracks and Traces.” Learn what to look for out in the field in a brief indoor introduction to tracking and then head out on the trails on snowshoes or on foot, depending on trail conditions. The program costs $3 per person and pre-registration is required as space is limited. Please call 279-1155.
Dress warmly for all programs with hat, mittens and boots.
