North Hoosick – George Wilson, 86, of North Hoosick, NY, passed away peacefully on Friday evening, February 11, 2011, at his residence with his family by his side. Born on February 22, 1924, in Schaghticoke, NY, he was the son of the late George and Mary (Bryant) Wilson. George served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. While serving in the 2nd Battalion, 515th Parachute Infantry Regiment, George achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant. He received several medals and ribbons while participating in the American Theater and European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaigns.
George worked construction in the International Union of Operating Engineers Local
#106 in Albany, NY, and worked at Oak Mitsui in Hoosick Falls, NY, until his retirement. He was a member of the Captain Maxson Post American Legion of Cambridge, NY. He was a lifetime member of the VFW in Greenwich, NY, and a former member of the North Hoosick Fire Department. George was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Hoosick Falls.
George was affectionately known by many nicknames including Junie, Red, Boss, Newt and Good Ole’ Mr. Wilson. Other than his wife, the things he cherished most were visits from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and camping with his family. The “Boss” also enjoyed “starting” handyman projects, browsing hardware stores and going various places with his son-in-law George Starr.
George is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty Elliott Wilson, whom he married on June 26, 1948, and his children, Darlene Starr and her husband George of North Hoosick, Patsy Sheffer of Potter Hill, Hoosick, and Debbie Thompson and her husband Leonard of New Ringgold, PA. He is also survived by a sister, Mary Harrington of Hoosick Falls, two half brothers, Clinton Wilson of Walloomsac, NY, and Thomas Wilson of White Creek, NY, his grandchildren, Myssi and husband Jeff Gardner of Potter Hill, Lori and husband Larry Goodell of North Bennington, VT, Tracey (Tramain) Cassano of Shaftsbury, VT, Daniel Sheffer of Potter Hill, Christopher and wife Nina Thompson of Tamaqua, PA, Matthew and wife Leslie Thompson of Tamaqua and Brian and wife Katie Thompson of Philadelphia, PA, as well as seven great-granddaughters and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was also pre-deceased by his brothers, Arthur Wilson and Joseph Bryant.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm on Friday, March 11, at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville, NY.
