Hoosick Grange News

Hoosick Grange met on January 26. It wasn’t a bad night, but attendance was lower. The January 12 meeting was cancelled because of bad weather. It’s amazing that the Grange was started in January in 1908, when they came with horse and wagons.  The Master, David Cornell, called on Martha Babbitt to report on the conference that she attended. Martha went to the Northeast Leaders Conference in Latham. She said there were 145 in attendance on Friday, the first day, and 30 or more came on Saturday. They came from 7 or 8 different states. She met the National Grange Master and showed him our new leaflet and program book and a picture of our new Grange sign. He told her what we are doing is very helpful.
The Lecturer brought to our attention that we need a new movie screen. Martha had a book that described the newest movie screens. Mary Remancus made a motion to buy the best screen. Norma Brenenstuhl seconded the motion, and it was voted on and passed. Money for the screen was donated by Marion Hynick and David Cornell. Carleton Philpott thanked Don and Martha for all the work they did on the Grange sign. Norma Brenenstuhl made a motion that we thank Martha for going to New York State Grange in Watertown and the Northeast Leaders Conference. Everyone agreed.
The Lecturer brought up the Chocolate Cake Contest to be held on May 25, so we can practice ahead of time. Norma B. read all about the contest. It’s to be a frosted chocolate cake, baked in a square tin. No mixes or commercial frosting is allowed. There will be two categories – regular and diabetic (use sugar substitute). No additional ingredients allowed such as nuts, chocolate chips, etc. The recipe must be submitted with name, address, Grange and county. No Professional Bakers may enter.
It was supposed to be Anniversary Night. The Lecturer read a statement by N.Y. State Grange Master Oliver Orton that was to set the theme for this year – “We in the Grange are one great extended family.” She read the important facts of his speech. The Lecturer read an article titled “Somebody’s Raising Their Kid Right.” It was on the teacher explaining evolution. The Lecturer read some jokes and had a closing thought.
Our next meeting is supposed to be on Wednesday, February 9, if the weather is good. All officers are to explain about their office. We’ll look at the program book. Refreshments for the evening were provided by David Cornell.
