On January 29 the Boy Scout Mahikan District hosted over 240 scouts at the annual Klondike Derby at Camp Rotary. The Klondike Derby is a hands-on scout adventure where patrols of scouts compete in winter survival and teamwork challenges. Each patrol pulls a sled, similar to a dog sled, throughout the winter terrain.

Two patrols from Petersburgh Boy Scout Troop #222 entered the competition and won the following 8 awards in the Bear Division: First Place Sled Race, Second Place Cross Cut Saw/Map Reading, Second Place Fire Building, Second Place Lunch Challenge, Second and Third Place Spider Web Challenge, Third Place Bear Bag and Third Place Nugget Toss. The event builds leadership, teamwork, and camaraderie, and, when things don’t go just right, the scouts have to work together to find a solution. One of the scouts, Timothy Thompson, and his father also participated in the annual “Freeze Out” where the scouts sleep outside in a tent when it is below freezing. Troop #222 serves boys from the Petersburgh, Berlin, Grafton and Stephentown area who are ages 11 through 17. The scouts meet at PVMCC in Petersburgh. Boys interested in becoming scouts are encouraged to contact Chuck Riccardi at 733-9855.
