A section of roof on one of the buildings at Taconic in Petersburgh collapsed from snow load on Tuesday, February 8, at 8:10 am. The building affected is across the road from Taconic’s main manufacturing plant, and it is used for inventory storage.
The company reacted quickly. By noon Wednesday, the affected area, a 60′ x16′ section of the shed, had been removed, the inventory formerly stored there had been relocated to other buildings on Taconic’s campus and cleanup operations were in full swing.
A company spokesman said the building will be rebuilt but may not be exactly as it was before. They are consulting an architect and beginning to evaluate their options this week.
The extent of the loss is not known yet, as they are still trying to evaluate how much of the inventory stored in that building, which is mostly PTFE coated fabric, was damaged and how much is OK. On first inspection, greater than 90% of the material seems to be undamaged, but further evaluation is ongoing.
Company operations will continue as usual, although the sudden shortage of space is creating some difficulties for company managers.
The loss will be covered by insurance, although there is a high deductible.
