Beginning A New Barn

Friday, April 27, 1855:: Today Geo P. went with two horse team and John F. went with his two horse to Pittsfield and they carried fruit trees and John F. returned home by sunset.
Saturday: Elijah Rich came and tagged our sheep, 43 of them, and I went with Rich and tagged Geo P. sheep. John F. paid 31 cts for tagging his and 44 cts for tagging Geo P. sheep. Today the horse that John F. bought of Moore slipped running in the old orchard and strained his leg.
Sunday: Today some rain, and this afternoon Geo P. returned home from Berkshire county selling fruit trees, his wife’s youngest sister Clarissa came with him.
Monday: I am quite lame today. This forenoon John F. helped Geo P. load fruit trees a spell, and today Geo P. started to go north into Vermont with two horse team. Frederick Russel butchered a calf for us and Egbert Jolls came and paid 70 cts for the skin, 9 lb, 4 oz.
Tuesday, May 1: Today Lias Jones began to hew timber for us for a barn. Patrick and Michael scored timber. Today John F. went up town, he bought course flour to Adams Mill and carried veal, but could not sell any. He called to Bull’s post office and paid up my Budget postage.
Wednesday: This morning John F. went with his horse and wagon and fetched Edward Jolls to saw timber. Today John did not work, only chored a little, he is unwell. Today Edward Jolls and Michael Manning scored timber for Lias Jones to hew. Patrick plowed new carrot ground and Michael’s garden. Today I cleaned brick out of the cheese house and piled hewings or chips.
Thursday: I planted in the garden early corn, beans, beets, cucumber, and squash. Edward Jolls scored for said Jones to hew.
Friday: Lias Jones hewed timber and Patrick and Jolls scored timber, and Patrick’s brother John planted potatoes in the young orchard.
Saturday: John F. trimmed trees and mended and fixed water poles across the river and at night he took his horse and wagon and carried Edward Jolls and Lias Jones on their way home and he paid 25 cts for half pound tea in Brown’s store, and today Egbert Jolls paid John F. three dollars and 62 cts for butter at 20 cts per.
Sunday: John F. took his horse and wagon and carried his sister Charlotte E. to the Chapel to Elder Sweetings meeting. Tonight Lias Jones returned home.
