Hoosick Falls – On March 5, 2011, our beloved father and grandfather, Irving “Irv” Stevens, 83, of Hoosick Falls, NY, was called upon to join his family in heaven. Born July 23, 1927, in Hoosick Falls, Irv was the only son of Ellsworth “Bud” Stevens and Agnes (Prebble) Stevens of Petersburgh, NY, and Hoosick, NY. Besides his parents, he is pre-deceased by a sister, Eleanor (infant) and his loving wife, Shirley (Marker) Stevens. Irv will be greatly missed by his loving children, daughter and son-in-law Elinor Stevens–Lewis and Richard Lewis of Gillett, PA, son and daughter-in law Kenneth Stevens and Margaret (DeRosa) Stevens of Hoosick Falls and daughter Carol Stevens of Hoosick Falls along with his cherished grandchildren, Chelsea Marie and Andrew Irving Stevens, also of Hoosick Falls. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins
Irv was a graduate of Walter A. Wood High School, Class of 1945. He was a veteran and proudly served his country in the Korean War. He was stationed in Korea from 1953 to 1954. Irv was employed by Blue Flame Gas, worked on the family farms and was a retired United States Postal worker after being employed in the Hoosick Falls Post Office for over 25 years. Irv met his wife Shirley while bowling. The couple was married on February 16, 1963. They resided for a short time in Hoosick before settling in Hoosick Falls where they made a home and raised their three children. Irv was an active member of the community; he was a volunteer firefighter and coached several of his children’s little league and softball teams. He was an active member, and served as the warden, of the St. Mark’s Episcopal Church for over 35 years. Irv volunteered his time to the Hoosick area food closet and the Louis Miller Museum and Hoosick Township Historical Society. Irv was a member of the G&H Railroad and the Rutland Railroad Historical Society, the Hoosick Falls Rod and Gun Club, the 78 records LP researcher’s club, the Bennington Stamp Club and had been a member of the Hoosick Grange. Irv took great pride in the work he did as a member of the Masons and Shrine fraternities. He achieved the station of Grand High Priest, was a member of the silver trowel and received the 32nd degree of the Scottish Rights. He was a member of the Cairo Temple in Rutland, VT. Irv was a devoted father and a generous, good friend to many. He was a history and railroad buff, loved reading, always helped a neighbor, could often be seen at his children and grandchildren’s sporting events and kept an optimistic outlook on life. He made a life to be proud of. His was a life extremely well lived.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Hoosick Falls Health Center and Dr. Marcus Martinez for the loving care they provided.
