Hoosick Grange News

It was the famous people of February night at Hoosick Grange. On February 23, Master David Cornell conducted the business part of the meeting.
After the business was finished the Lecturer had her program. She started the program with a poem titled, “Groundhog’s Holiday.” She then asked the question, “What color was George Washington’s hair?” Most of the Grangers thought it was white, but the answer was red, covered with a powdered wig. The Lecturer read many interesting things about George, The Father of Our Country. Next it was many interesting facts about Abraham Lincoln. She asked the question, “Did Abraham Lincoln sleep on bedsprings?” The answer was only the last 15 years of his life. They weren’t invented until 1850. James Liddy of Watertown, NY, fell asleep on the seat of his surrey and woke up with the idea for household beds. The Lecturer had an article on Abraham Lincoln’s son, how he was saved by the famous actor, Edwin Booth, whose brother was John Wilkes Booth. A year later, Abe Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, by a shot to the head. There was another story in regard to Lincoln. A former hat maker, Thomas P. Corbett of Troy was the one who shot John Wilkes Booth, in the head.
The Lecturer had a game – name the last name of Big Band singers. No one had them all right. In honor of Martin Luther King Jr., she read his speech “I Have A Dream.” For Valentine Day she had a true love story titled “True Love.” She also had some quotes about love from the mouths of babes and had a closing thought from Abe Lincoln – “Am I not destroying my enemies when I make friends of them?”
