When you hear the church bells ringing at noon on Tuesday, April 12, in Berlin and other towns throughout Rensselaer County, it will be to commemorate the beginning of the Civil War 150 years ago.
According to Town Clerk records, 183 men enlisted in Berlin. Some of these men were from the surrounding area and most joined the 125th Infantry. Of the 183 enlistees at least 26 were killed and 7 wounded.
After the war the Berlin veterans formed a chapter of the G. A. R. (Grand Army of the Republic) and another for the Sons of the G.A.R. One of the reunions of the 125th Infantry was held in Berlin. A photo of the reunion was taken near the monument in Berlin in front of the apartment house currently owned by Doug Goodermote.
