Fred A. Humphrey

Petersburgh –  Fred A. Humphrey, 76, of Russell Road, Petersburgh, NY, died on Thursday, April 14, 2011, surrounded by his loving family at Samaritan Hospital in Troy, NY, under the care of Community Hospice of Rensselaer County.
Born August 14, 1934, in Troy, he was the son of the late Floyd A. and Ruth Hakes Humphrey. He was the loving husband of Lenore Jones Humphrey, whom he married on August 13, 1989, in Petersburgh. A resident of Petersburgh most of his life, he was a member of the Petersburgh United Methodist Church and also belonged to Sacred Heart Church in Berlin, NY.
Fred was a 1952 graduate of Berlin Central High School and graduated in 1954 from Hudson Valley Community College. He worked for Winchester Rifle in Connecticut, Haynes Ford in Hoosick, NY, and the Watervliet Arsenal. Fred was the Highway Superintendent for the Town of Petersburgh and a Traffic Control Supervisor for the Rensselaer County Highway Department retiring in 1999 after 25 years of service. He was a founding member and 30 year active member of the Petersburgh Rescue Squad and a 40 year member of the Petersburgh Volunteer Fire Department. He played in the Petersburgh Town Band, loved riding his motorcycle in his younger days and was a member of the NYS Association of Highway Superintendents. Fred loved working with soil, gardening and landscaping. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and animals. He was a great neighbor known as the “Go to Guy,” helping anyone in need with yard work or construction.
Survivors include his wife Lenore, his children, Dr. Mark A. and wife Susan Humphrey of Oswego, NY, Matthew T. and wife Donna Humphrey of Missouri City, TX, Luke A. and wife Helen Humphrey of Reardan, WA, Lucinda L. and husband Craig Scharf of Rosewood, KY, Nicholas J. and wife Bonita Humphrey of Fonda, NY, Melissa M. and husband James Durand of Troy and Erika L. and husband Charles Douglas of Grafton, NY, a brother, F. Richard and wife Charlotte Humphrey of Hoosick Falls, NY, nine grandchildren and a great-grandson.
Relatives and friends were invited to the Thomas M. Barber Funeral Home, 66 Armsby Road, Petersburgh, on Sunday, April 17, from noon until 3 for visitation. A Memorial Service will start at 3 pm with Pastor Edward Whited officiating.
In lieu of flowers, Fred’s family would appreciate that memorial contributions be made to the Petersburgh Rescue Squad in his memory.
