George’s Last Birthday – He Turns 64

Thursday, June 7, 1855: Quite a rainy day. Today my two sons washed their sheep, Geo P. and hired man Edward Manning and John F. hired man Patrick Rafferty washed said sheep and John F. and hired boy Allen Smith put them in the water and then John F. put his sheep in the widow Freelove Wylie’s pasture near Sq Leland Sheldon’s, he had bargained with James M. Glass for to hire said pasture, they washed sheep in the river that Adams Mill stands on near.
Friday: Today John F. took his sheep from said widow F. Wylie’s pasture by command of J. M. Glass, and his excuse another man claimed the pasture by the name of Daboll, of a former bargain had hired said pasture. Today my two sons rode to the Shakers to see if they would come and make my barn but could not engage them at present.
Saturday: Today John F. and Patrick plowed and scraped for to move a barn onto and set a new barn, and Eliza Wylie came and paid John F. two dollars for a pig. This evening Geo P. and wife and Sarah rode over to James Bennett’s, he had a daughter born yesterday.
Wednesday: John F. and Edward Hatch and Patrick dug out for the barn. Towards night John F. fetched a Shaker and his Jacks to raise the barn and Geo P. went this evening and fetched another Jack from the Shakers. I am 64 years old.
Thursday: Today we began to move the barn on rollers by the help of the Shaker and the use of his jacks, Geo P. and his two hired men Patrick and Edward Hatch and Michael and John F. we moved the barn half the width of it.
