Letter To The Editor – An Amazing Outpouring Of Assistance

April 29, 2011 By eastwickpress

Letter to the editor:
Every so often a situation arises that allows us to see first hand the acts of selfless dedication that so many individuals in our communities and region make on a regular basis that have an impact on all our lives. The recent propane tanker fire in Hoosick is one such incident where we were all witness to an amazing outpouring of assistance from across the entire County and beyond to help ensure a positive outcome.
During the response effort hundreds of individuals were called upon to protect the lives and property of those in danger. Law enforcement agencies including the Sheriff’s Department, State Police, Hoosick Falls Police and the State Park Rangers, jumped into action. Hundreds of volunteer firefighters from across the County were called upon to serve at the scene of the accident or to provide back up to neighboring communities whose first responders were on scene. In all, 43 fire departments responded including 8 from neighboring counties. Specialized teams including the County’s Hazmat Team and the Troy Fire Department offered their expertise and assistance throughout the incident as well.
I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the leadership of Hoosick Fire Chief Bill Rifenburgh who, as incident commander, performed in a manner that can be described as no less than stellar. Chief Rifenburgh never hesitated to seek out assistance or resources, and the emergency management team put in place during the incident operated in a manner that I feel should be emulated if we ever find ourselves in a similar situation in the future.
Just as gratifying as the response from our emergency responders was the outpouring of support from residents, businesses and organizations that helped support those working at the scene of the incident or assisted those forced to flee their homes. From neighbors who offered a meal or a warm place to stay to the Red Cross who set up shelters and all those who provided meals to the hundreds of volunteers.
To all those who helped, Thank You! Your efforts truly made a difference and helped ensure a positive outcome to what could have been a terrible situation.
Sincerely,
Kathy Jimino, Rensselaer County Executive
