Pinewood Derby: Flippin’ Fast Fun

April 8, 2011 By eastwickpress

by Sherry Bowman-Kluck
Cub Scout Pack 911 held its 16 double-elimination Pinewood Derby at the Petersburgh Baptist Church on Saturday, March 12. Over 65 people attended the event, nearly doubling last year’s attendance. One could feel the excitement in the air as each young cub weighed in with his handmade masterpiece while diligently sizing up their competition. It was a broad spectrum of derby racers this year and not just your typical race car. Each one was unique and characteristic of its builder. Trucks, boats, a submarine and even some with little Lego drivers could be seen racing down the three lane, 32 foot bright blue and yellow track. Without a doubt, it was fun and fast, some so fast in fact that a few lost wheels or flipped off the track! Each member of the Tiger, Wolf and Webelos Dens had the opportunity to race his fellow cubs for a first, second and third place trophy. Top racers then vied for the status of overall pack winner.

The overall winners of the 911 Pack were: First Place – Joshua Kluck with the Webelos Den, Second Place – Matthew Kluck with the Tiger Den and Third Place – Lane Pelletier with the Wolf Den. All scout members received ribbons for participating in the event. The afternoon ended with pizza, dessert and lots of Pinewood Derby reminiscing.
