P. Thomas Carroll will give a talk, “The Hudson-Mohawk Region: Silicon Valley of the Nineteenth Century,” to the Stephentown Historical Society on Monday, April 4, at 7:30 pm. The meeting will be at the Stephentown Heritage Center on Garfield Road, Stephentown. It is free and open to the public. The building is handicapped accessible. The Hudson-Mohawk region is often called the birthplace of the American industrial revolution. Carroll adds another dimension to this assessment in which upstate New Yorkers consciously made the cutting edge technology of their times the focus for regional prosperity. They cultivated infrastructure developments in transportation, education and investment banking. They were also very aware that their technological changes would not improve the rural-agrarian lifestyle, but would replace it with our modern urban-industrial way of life.
Dr. Carroll is Executive Director of the Hudson Mohawk Industrial Gateway and Riverspark Heritage Area. A graduate of Cal Tech and the University of Pennsylvania, he is an American cultural historian who specializes in the history of science and technology. He has published works on Charles Darwin, on the history of solid propellant rocketry and on American chemistry, as well as the history of this region. He lives in Troy.
